Championing Neurodiversity
At Cheekee Hero Charity, we believe that every child deserves to be seen, heard, and valued. We recognise that neurodivergent tamariki and rangatahi experience the world in unique ways, and rather than fitting them into systems that weren't designed with them in mind, we must work together to create a world where they truly belong.
The Need for Systemic Change
For far too long, neurodivergent individuals have been expected to adapt to environments that don't acknowledge or support their strengths and challenges. From early childhood through to adulthood, the lack of understanding, tailored support, and inclusive policies results in a system that isolates, disadvantages, and often fails our most vulnerable.
The statistics speak for themselves-higher rates of mental health challenges, school disengagement, and social exclusion among neurodivergent individuals highlight a pressing need for change. But change isn't just about adding more services; it's about shifting mindsets, reshaping environments, and ensuring neurodiversity is valued rather than simply accommodated.
True inclusion means more than just awareness-it means belonging. When tamariki and rangatahi feel that they are understood and celebrated for who they are, rather than pressured to conform, they thrive. And when they thrive, they show society a better way forward-one built on empathy, flexibility, and the richness of diverse perspectives.
Ōrākei-Based Neurodiversity Workshops
As part of our commitment to this kaupapa, Cheekee Hero Charity, in partnership with Acorn Neurodiversity and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Māia, Toi Ora, will be hosting a Neurodiversity Workshop at Ōrākei School:
📅 Saturday, 29th March
🕥 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
📍 Ōrākei School (Hall)
This workshop will provide parents, caregivers, and whānau with valuable tools and insights to better understand and support neurodivergent tamariki and rangatahi. It will also serve as a space for whānau to share their journeys and advocate for systemic changes in our schools, workplaces, and wider communities.
Please RSVP by Monday, 24th of March. Every successful RSVP online and registration at the event will receive a goodie-pack.
We Need Your Voice
Understanding the true needs of our community starts with listening. Acorn has curated a questionnaire to help families share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations. This initiative is more than just data collection-it's about ensuring that the right voices are leading the conversation on systemic change.
If you are interested in viewing and contributing to the questionnaire, please email jasmine.soa@cheekeehero.com.
Tēnei te mihi atu ki te Ōrākei Local Board for your unwavering support.
